HUPAC Round Up

This week in politics we got a couple of more indications about what the Republican 2016 presidential field may look like. Along with former Florida Governor Jeb Bush who announced the creation of an exploratory committee back in December, now the GOP’s 2012 nominee, Governor Mitt Romney, is mulling whether to give it another go. Several reports have Romney reaching out to former advisors, donors, and many close to Romney say he is definitely running again...

Several reports have Romney reaching out to former advisors, donors, and many close to Romney say he is definitely running again, it's just a matter of when he announces. Many in the Republican establishment believe he should sit it out after already having his shot and failing to defeat President Obama. If Romney decides to throw his hat in the ring this would be the third time he runs for the nomination.

Romney's running mate in 2012, Congressman Paul Ryan, also put an end to any speculation that he might run for the nomination, making it clear that he will not run and instead will focus on his work as the chairman of the all powerful House Ways and Means Committee. First on Chairman Ryan's list will be overhauling the corporate tax system, which has support from both parties. Chairman Ryan may have realized that his chances to win the nomination were slim. Plus the power Congress and his chairmanship will bring him to shape the nation's legislative agenda and what issues Congress decides to take on is pretty alluring.

Looking beyond the presidential race, last week we reported on the 2016 open Senate seat in California as long-time Senator Boxer announced her retirement, including the possible Democratic candidates for the seat. Well, the first shoe has dropped as California Attorney General Kamala Harris has announced her intention to seek the open seat. Her announcement comes two days after fellow Democrat and Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsome announced he would not seek the seat. Newsome and Harris attract the same type of Democratic voters and donors so many speculated there was not enough room for both of them in either race. Harris is the daughter of a Jamaican-American and an Indian mother, so she would make history as California's first black senator as well as its first Asian-American senator. Political prognosticators expect former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and billionaire Tom Steyer to be the next two candidates to announce their intentions.
