Year-end Letter from President & CEO Nicole Harris

As we near the end of 2018, I’ve been reflecting on what’s happened since the historic combination of NGA and GANA on February 1, 2018. Our first year of integration culminated with an energetic focus on our Association’s future. Last month, our Board of Directors and other industry stakeholders gathered to identify the most pressing issues facing our industry and how we will address those for our members’ benefit.

This NGA Strategic Planning Meeting yielded the following 3-5-year goals:

  • Education – NGA is firmly dedicated to being a reliable and consistent source of education and training on glass, its fabrication, installation and use.
  • Promotion of Glass – NGA will work to enhance the image of glass and the glass industry. It aims to demonstrate glass as safe, healthy, sustainable, and inspiring; and to also demonstrate the glass industry as a viable, thriving and exciting career path.
  • Advocacy – NGA will become an even stronger advocate to defend and promote the glass industry.

Top Metal Companies 2018 | The 7th Annual Report

Glass Magazine, the official publication of NGA, has published its 2018 Top Metal Companies report, focusing on adaptation through innovation. In a year underscored by market uncertainty, North America’s architectural metal industry experienced overall growth for the sixth year in a row.

While enjoying an expanding economy, industry members struggled with a continuing labor shortage and the effects of the newly implemented steel and aluminum tariffs. Companies counteracted these challenges by investing in efficiency and streamlining processes, using improved software and communication along the supply chain to help speed turnaround. Respondents also used software to enable better collaboration with team members, onsite and off.

Backlog Calculator: Track Project Earnings, Billings, Unexpected Costs and More

By Bryan Bush, from Glass Magazine's Glaziers' Toolbox
Accurate backlog calculations are critical to every glazing contractor. Backlogs provide a clear picture of current profit margins and available resources for ongoing and future projects. They help a company determine whether it has the resources to take on new jobs and help estimators produce better bids. They help direct a company on everything from when to hire new employees to when to invest in machinery to when to purchase a new truck.

Backlogs are also closely reviewed by a company’s financial partners. Surety companies look to backlogs to ensure a business has an ongoing revenue stream. Banks rely on the calculations when approving lines of credit.

A Safer Workplace: A Guide to Safety on the Jobsite and in the Plant

by Joe Schiavone and Brian Stratton
Glass Magazine
The glass industry can be a dangerous place. Glass manufacturers and glazing contractors report higher than average rates of injury and illness, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The workplace injury and illness incidence rate for glass manufacturing is 3.9 per 100 full-time equivalent workers, compared to 3.6 for manufacturing as a whole and 2.9 for all private industry. Glazing contractors report an incidence rate of 3.7, compared to 3.2 for all of construction.

“Glass is an inherently heavy and fragile material. Precautions must be taken to prevent damage and, most importantly, [to prevent] injuries,” says Joe Schiavone, director of sales for C.R. Laurence Co.

Preventing injuries requires that industry companies create a culture of safety built on training, communication, whole-team buy-in, the right equipment and more, says Brian Stratton, safety manager for Linetec.
