The Industry is Hiring a New Type of Glazier

The industry is hiring a new type of glazier, focusing more on candidates’ training potential than their experience. “Longevity and specific skillsets used to be the [ideal] when reviewing resumés,” says Sherri Blackledge, human resources manager for YKK AP America. “Now when looking at resumés, companies should be open to asking: ‘do they show evidence of the right kind of skillsets where we can train them for the job?’”

Gone are the days when glazing contractors could hire from a veteran glazier pool. Instead, many companies today are bringing on inexperienced employees who show potential and training them on the job.

“The industry’s number one challenge is lack of skilled labor,” says Brian Hale, chief operating officer of Hale Glass Inc. “We’ve always done some level of education, but now we find ourselves bringing in complete trainees. We offer them opportunities to learn and advance. Then they’re expected to perform.”

Recognizing that in-house training programs can put a financial burden on glass companies—not to mention a time burden on the more experienced employees tasked with training—the National Glass Association has relaunched to assist the industry in its training efforts. The new website features more than 60 classes that employees can take online. Each of these classes varies in length from 20-60 minutes and is designed to teach employees basic job skills and knowledge that will complement the on-the-job training their employers provide. While these classes do not replace hands-on experience, they can shorten training time, getting new employees into the field faster.

“ meets the needs of today's glazier workforce in a way that hasn't been done before,” says Stephanie Oakley, senior manager of education and training, NGA. “Employers can select classes that meet the individual needs of their employees to create a custom training program. And glaziers can access courses online from any device—desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone—at any time. It is flexible but targeted, allowing business owners to shorten training time and get labor out into the field with a foundational skill and knowledge base that's consistent and accurate.”
