Dodge Momentum Index Drops in December

Glass Magazine

The commercial component of the Dodge Momentum Index fell 7.6 percent in December, with the overall Index dropping 4.9 percent for the month. The Momentum Index, issued by Dodge Data & Analytics, is a monthly measure of the first (or initial) report for nonresidential building projects in planning, which have been shown to lead construction spending for nonresidential buildings by a full year.

While 2018 saw net gains for the Index, rising 4.3 percent overall, the increases happened in the first half of the year, with the final six months registering a 4.4 percent drop overall, and a 7.2 percent decrease for the commercial component. Dodge Data analysts suggest that the behavior for the commercial component suggests that spending has peaked for this cycle.
