Some interesting news hit since the time I wrote my last Talk on windowanddoor.com: President Donald Trump released his proposed 2018 federal budget, and among some of the cuts was the proposed elimination of the Energy Star program.

Putting politics aside, the budget was, of course, simply a draft, and is subject to much change before it resembles anything close to law. It also isn’t expected to make it through Congress without significant revision. Likewise, a number of major industry groups have opposed the elimination of Energy Star, including the Window and Door Manufacturers Association.

The Budget Conversation: Four ways to alleviate budget anxiety for homeowners

Why is it that when you mention the word “budget,” homeowners freeze? An otherwise pleasant conversation suddenly comes to a screeching halt as soon as you dare to say “let’s talk about your budget.” The response, more often than not, is crickets.

Truth is: homeowners are afraid of being wrong, of overspending or being duped. Most are unfamiliar with the products and the selections and the process and feel that throwing a number out there will make them look naive or uninformed. Another truth: it's your job as the salesperson to demystify the budget.

Rushing into a budget conversation without context or rapport, dancing around budget questions to the point where the consumer is even more apprehensive, or avoiding the conversation altogether can result in the loss of sale that could have been easily closed.
