DOE Delays Release of Proposed
Energy Star Criteria
The U.S. Department of Energy announced on Monday that it would delay release of its proposed criteria changes for the Energy Star Windows, Doors and Skylight program. DOE had planned to issue its proposals for new, more stringent requirements in early March, but now states it will wait until May.
In a letter to stakeholders, Richard Karney, Energy Star program manager, said the timeline had been revised to give due consideration to the feedback DOE had received already, as well as likely revisions to the International Energy Conservation Code. One of DOE's stated goals for the Energy Star requirements is that they be more stringent than those in the code. International Code Council hearings where new energy performance requirements for windows and doors may be considered are taking place this week in Palm Springs, Calif.
Under the new timeline, DOE plans to publish and distribute its initial analysis and proposals for the new Energy Star requirements in early May. A stakeholder meeting allowing the industry to offer its final input will then be scheduled in Washington. D.C., in late May or early June. The final criteria will then be issued in July with the earliest effective date said to be April 2009.
