Andersen Builds New Steam Plant
to Power Operations
A new steam generating facility at Andersen Corp.’s Bayport production facility gives the company the ability to use virtually all renewable energy to help power manufacturing operations, the company reports. Using byproducts from its manufacturing operations as the steam plant’s primary energy source, two new wood-fired boilers provide enough energy to heat and cool Andersen’s 65-acre campus and to power equipment used in the manufacturing process.

Prior to building the new plant, Andersen purchased most of its energy from a neighboring power plant that eliminated the service to their customers, including Andersen. Wood sawdust was chosen as the primary boiler fuel because it is a renewable resource and an ample supply is generated from the company’s operations. The new boilers are equipped with an electrostatic precipitator, which removes particulate matter from the boiler exhaust. The ash byproduct is approved for use by area farmers to amend the soil in their fields.
The new steam plant is said to be the latest example of the company’s 105-year history of innovative design and environmental stewardship in its own operations. “Andersen is committed to environmental stewardship, not only in the products that we make, but how we make those products,” says Jim Humphrey, president and CEO.
Andersen was recognized by The Minnesota Environmental Initiative with the 2007 Green Business and Environmental Management Award for the new steam plant. This distinction is given for outstanding partnership between business, government and environmental groups. In addition, the plant received recognition and accolades from state and local representatives, business leaders and media. Andersen has also conducted facility tours with visiting environmental engineers and educators to provide information around the plant’s design and operation.
