NJBankers Membership Urged to Vote For Gerald H. Lipkin for FHLBNY Director

The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York is scheduled to mail ballots this Friday, October 4, 2013, for the upcoming elections for candidates to serve on its Board of Directors. One election will fill the vacancy for a seat that represents the Bank's New Jersey members for a term that begins January 1, 2014.

At its May 15, 2013 meeting, the NJBankers Board of Directors unanimously named Gerald H. Lipkin, chairman, president & CEO, Valley National Bank, headquartered in Wayne, NJ, as the New Jersey recommended candidate. Lipkin has a long career as both a regulator and banker in the New Jersey marketplace and will be a valuable addition to the Board in representing the interests of member banks.    Read more

 
Ficalora Elected Vice Chairman and Former Vice Chairman Gonzalez Joins as Executive Vice President of the Federal Home Loan Bank of NY

    

The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York announced that Joseph R. Ficalora has been elected by its Board of Directors to serve as the Board’s vice chairman and that Jose Ramon Gonzalez will join the Bank as executive vice president on October 15, 2013.   Read more

 
Members Urged to be Alert for HELOC and Telephone Hijacking Frauds

A NJBankers member reported that his bank was the intended target of an attempted HELOC fraud that involved the hijacking of the bank’s customer’s telephone number (phreaking).

When the bank was presented a $200,000 home equity check for payment, per procedures, bank personnel contacted the “customer” at the home telephone number provided on the application who correctly provided answers to security questions and verified that he had written the check. Several weeks later, the real customer came to the bank claiming that he had not written the check nor had received the telephone call to verify its authenticity. Upon subsequent investigation, it was determined that the perpetrator(s) had diverted the customer’s telephone number and had obtained information such as the customer’s last four digits of his social security number, the account number, date of birth  and a copy of his signature. The bank has also had other similar type items presented for payment using “engineered” copies of official bank HELOC checks on these seasoned accounts.   Read more

Karen A. Casey was presented the Warren Hill Award at the 91st Annual Senior Management Conference during the General Session on Thursday, September 26, 2013.

The Warren Hill Award was established in 1998 in honor of Warren Hill, the New Jersey League’s president from 1966 through 1975.   Read more

 
Sandy Recovery Money Available to Fill Vacant Apartments

If any of your customers who own rental properties have vacant units they are unable to rent, refer them to the Landlord Incentive Program, one of the federally funded Superstorm Sandy recovery programs that can provide a landlord with a steady revenue stream for two years for an apartment leased at fair market value.

Launched by the Christie Administration to encourage property owners to fill their vacant apartments, the Landlord Incentive Program allocates $40 million in grants to provide a rental property owner with approximately the difference between 30 percent of the tenant’s monthly income and the fair market rents each month during the two year period of the program administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA).   Read more

Columbia Bank Foundation Grant Helps Little Sisters of the Poor

Columbia Bank, through their Columbia Bank Foundation, recently provided a $20,000 grant to the Little Sisters of the Poor.  The grant was used to purchase much-needed HVAC equipment for their St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly, a skilled nursing care and residential home operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor in Totowa.

Roselle Savings Bank Donates School Supplies to Local Area Children

Roselle Savings Bank recently marked its first year of participation in the United Way of Greater Union County 2013 “Stuff the Bus” campaign.  The bank purchased new school supplies for distribution to needy students from low-income families residing in Union County, North Plainfield, and South Plainfield.  Many essential school items were donated, including backpacks, notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, erasers, glue sticks, rulers, and crayons.

Sun National Bank Opens New Glassboro Branch

Sun National Bank executives recently celebrated the opening of their new Glassboro branch with a ribbon-cutting event, attended by borough officials and regional business leaders.  A customized prototype designed to serve the needs of Rowan University and Glassboro merchants and residents, the new Sun branch is the first bank branch to be located in downtown Glassboro in 18 years.  The branch is part of Rowan Boulevard, the centerpiece of Glassboro's $300 million downtown redevelopment project and NJ’s largest municipal redevelopment project.     Read more
