New Jersey Bankers Education Foundation Update
By Robert Stillwell, chairman, New Jersey Bankers Education Foundation president & CEO, Boiling Springs Savings Bank

The New Jersey Bankers Education Foundation was established in 2005 as a 501(c)(3) organization to honor fallen or permanently disabled military members in the post-9/11 Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts by providing scholarships to their eligible dependents. Since then, the Trustees have awarded scholarships to a Brick, NJ, spouse of an Army National Guard Specialist who lost his life in Iraq in 2004 that enabled her to graduate Georgian Court University; and to a Long Branch, NJ, spouse of an Army Corporal who was killed in Iraq in 2009 who then graduated with her master’s degree from Monmouth University.

Since 2011, the Foundation has also supported veteran students attending Rutgers University through grants to its Office of Veterans Services. These funds are used to provide support to veteran students facing financial difficulties in completing their education. Without this support, many of these students would have had no choice but to drop out of the university.

The Foundation and NJBankers members have been formally recognized by Rutgers University and received positive media coverage on its activities.

We respectively ask all NJBankers members for their support with the following:

• Due to privacy issues, we do not have direct access to potential scholarship candidates but work closely with the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and other organizations to reach these individuals. Any assistance you can provide in disseminating this information by adding a link from your bank’s website to the Education Foundation webpage (under Community Outreach page on
www.njbankers.com) or other means would be appreciated;

• Consider providing financial support to the Foundation so that we can continue to provide scholarships and grants for many years into the future.

The Foundation is fully funded by members of the New Jersey Bankers Association. While there is no suggested contribution, we ask that members be as generous as possible, as there is no better way to honor the service of these heroes that have sacrificed so much for us. Checks should be made payable to the New Jersey Bankers Education Foundation and mailed to the NJBankers office at 411 North Avenue East, Cranford, NJ 07016. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and contributions are tax deductible.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please reach out to Jim Meredith (908.272.8500, ext 614, or jmeredith@njbankers.com). Thank you.

The use of mobile phones to make payments at the point-of-sale has experienced substantial growth over the past several years, increasing threefold between the 2011 and 2012 surveys, and again between 2012 and 2013. In 2013, 17 percent of smartphone owners, representing 9 percent of the U.S. adult population, reported having used their phone to make a purchase at a retail store in the past 12 months.

Record Growth, New Headquarters and Awards Mark Associate Member COCC's 47th Year in Business

Associate member COCC finished 2013 with record growth, a new corporate headquarters, top grades from clients, and fresh recognition as one of Connecticut’s top five Best Places to Work an accomplishment for three years.

COCC moved to a new corporate headquarters in Southington, CT this year and the company's CFO, David K. Christie received the “CFO of the Year” award.

COCC continues to win new business with its fully-integrated core technology service which powers bank and credit union clients throughout the northeastern U.S.

At the same time, COCC has continued to develop and implement core processing ‘apps,’ which enable clients to shop for technology improvements, try them free of charge and install them at any time. This model changes the game for financial institutions who no longer need to wait for annual software updates in order to install new features.
The Best Places to Work in Connecticut award identifies and recognizes companies that engage their employees in the business and strike an effective work-life balance. Employee responses to a confidential survey are key to determining which company earns an award.

In addition to being recognized by the Hartford Business Journal as one of Connecticut’s Best Places to Work for both 2013 and 2014, the Hartford Courant and FoxCT named COCC a Top Workplace in Connecticut in 2011, 2012 and 2013.  Additionally, COCC was also recognized by a client - MountainOne Bank in North Adams, MA - for outstanding service during 2012 and 2013.
