NJBanker Members Visit Washington DC
Michael Affuso, Executive Vice President, New Jersey Bankers Association

Last week, more than 20  NJBankers members participated in the American Bankers Association’s Government Relations Summit in Washington DC.  Our delegation was one of the many from across America to participate in the 1,000 strong Summit.  Members attended  presentations from regulators as well as from Congressional leaders.

Regulators discussed current regulatory issues and attempted to allay bankers’ fears that overzealous enforcement would replace common sense and dollars and cents.  Bankers who attended the Summit also had the chance to hear from the ABA about issues concerning mutuality. Congressional leaders also addressed the group.

Congresswomen Shelly Moore Capito, Chair of the Financial Institutions Sub-Committee of the House Financial Services Committee, discussed her efforts to reduce the regulatory burden that financial institutions face in the wake of Dodd-Frank.  She highlighted her regulatory relief bill.

Senator Heidi Heidkamp, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, focused on what she believed to be important issues especially focusing on smaller institutions and rural lending.  She noted the need for common sense solutions and not academic theories.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor also discussed the plans of the House Majority and the larger issues facing the nation.

NJBankers members held meetings with our Congressional delegation and their staff.  Issues discussed ranged from data breaches to over-regulation to mutuality.  All bankers left with a better understanding of the challenges that we face as a nation and as an industry.

After the Hill meetings, Riker Danzig  Scherer Hyland  & Perretti LLP hosted a reception for NJBankers members and dinner was sponsored by FinPro, Inc. at the Capitol Hill Club.  We thank our sponsors for their generosity.

NJBankers will be hosting our regulatory visit to Washington on June 24 and 25; scheduled meetings will include the OCC, FDIC, Federal Reserve and CFPB.  We urge you to attend.
