NJBankers Membership Honors Veterans and Their Families this Memorial Day

With Memorial Day 2014 approaching, we hope that you will take time over the weekend to remember those who have served our country, particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms. It is also a time to honor those American families for whom Memorial Day is another day without their loved ones.

In addition to the support NJBankers members provide individually to assist veterans and their families, the New Jersey banking industry has come together for the past nine years to collectively honor the service of those who gave their lives and to assist returning veteran students facing financial challenges.

The New Jersey Bankers Education Foundation was established in 2005 as a 501(c)(3) organization to honor fallen or permanently disabled military members in the post-9/11 Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts by providing scholarships to their eligible dependents. Since then, the Trustees have awarded scholarships to a Brick, NJ, spouse of an Army National Guard Specialist who lost his life in Iraq in 2004 that enabled her to graduate Georgian Court University; and to a Long Branch, NJ, spouse of an Army Corporal who was killed in Iraq in 2009 who then graduated with her master’s degree from Monmouth University in 2013.

Rutgers Veterans Assisted: Since 2011, the Foundation has also supported veteran students attending Rutgers University through grants to its Office of Veterans Services. These funds are used to provide support to veteran students facing financial difficulties in completing their education. Without this support, many of these students would have had no choice but to drop out of the university.  Here are just a few examples of how these grants have helped Rutgers’ veteran students in 2014:

  • Eight students were helped with the purchase of textbooks after their Veteran Administration (VA) book stipend had been exhausted.
  • Six students were provided with emergency scholarships for unexpected financial emergencies that allowed them to stay enrolled in classes.
  • Funds were advanced to four students who experienced delays in receiving their VA benefits for tuition, fees, books and substance allowance.
  • A scholarship was provided to a student whose mother died during the fall semester forcing him to withdraw from classes. Because of the withdrawal, he owed the VA funds that had been advanced for tuition that had to be reimbursed. Rutgers’ Office of Veteran Services used a portion of the Foundation contribution to reimburse the VA and allow the student to enroll in spring classes.

Thanks to 2014 Contributors: Over the years, many members have contributed funds that have made this possible. We acknowledge those that have made contributions thus far this year: Atlantic Stewardship Bank; Boiling Springs Savings Bank; Bogota Savings Bank; Century Savings Bank; Clifton Savings Bank; Colonial American Bank; Glen Rock Savings Bank; Lakeland Bank; Manasquan Savings Bank; Metuchen Savings Bank; The Provident Bank and Roselle Savings Bank.

Member Assistance Needed: We respectively ask all NJBankers members for their support with the following:

  • Due to privacy issues, we do not have direct access to potential scholarship candidates but work closely with the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and other organizations to reach these individuals. Any assistance you can provide in disseminating this information by adding a link from your bank’s website to the Education Foundation webpage (under Community Outreach page on www.njbankers.com) or other means would be appreciated.

Thanks to Boiling Springs Savings Bank for posting information on the Foundation on its Facebook page and on the blog section of its website – the post has reached over 13,000 views on Facebook and received 30 likes in just 10 days!

  • Consider providing financial support to the Foundation so that we can continue to provide scholarships and grants for many years into the future.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and contributions are tax deductible.  If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Jim Meredith (908.272.8500, ext 614, or jmeredith@njbankers.com).

The Provident Bank Foundation Supports '100 Days of Silence: A Response to the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda'

The Provident Bank Foundation has provided a $7,500 grant to the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education (chhange) at Brookdale Community College in support of its “100 Days of Silence” exhibit, an art initiative that commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The Foundation grant enables students, educators, community members and genocide survivors to experience history through art. Students in grades five through 12 in schools throughout Northern and Central New Jersey learned about the genocide and were inspired to create their responses using life-size forms as canvases. The result is a powerful, beautiful, haunting and hope-filled statement about genocide and humanity. The exhibit is on display at the chhange facility on the college campus for 100 days – from April 7 to July 15, 2014.
