NJBankers Continues its Support for Veteran Education Initiatives

The Trustees of the New Jersey Bankers Charitable Foundation recently approved funding for education initiatives at Rutgers University and Rider University. The Trustees approved a $10,000 donation to the Rutgers Office of Veteran Services and $15,000 to Rider University’s Veteran Entrepreneurship Program.

The Rutgers’s funds will be used to assist veteran students attending the University that face sudden and unexpected financial difficulties that, without some assistance, could jeopardize their continuing with their education.  The Rider University funds will be used to support a six week boot camp and mentoring program for veterans to further develop their concepts for starting their own businesses.   The Foundation has supported both initiatives in the past.

New Foreclosure Forbearance Law

On February 10, 2017, Governor Christie signed into law legislation that creates certain remedies for people who purport to be effected by Hurricane Sandy.  This bill was opposed by the Association. NJBankers in conjunction with the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, has released the results of our seventh annual NJBankers Economic Survey of Bank CEOs. The survey asked about national and state current economic assessments, as well as six-month projections; expectations about long-term and short-term interest rates; commercial real estate and business loan demand;  residential loan demand; cybersecurity and more.

NJBankers in conjunction with the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers, produced a Webinar on February 13th presenting the findings of the NJBankers 2016-17 Economic Survey, an analysis of the national and state economies from the perspective of bankers.

The survey was conducted under the direction of James W. Hughes, Ph.D., distinguished professor and dean of the Bloustein School; Marc D. Weiner, J.D., Ph.D., Associate Research Professor and Evan Iacobucci, data analyst and research assistant, also of the Bloustein School. John E. McWeeney, Jr., NJBankers President and CEO coordinated the survey and Webinar.
Speakers included John McWeeney, Dr. Weiner, and Dr. Hughes.

Emerging Leaders Go to Trenton

On Feb. 1st, bankers who participate in the Emerging Leaders module of the NJBankers Leadership Academy left their desks and offices behind and headed to Trenton for a full-day session about being an industry advocate as well as an emerging leader in their respective banks. Banking industry advocates and key leaders spoke with the group at the Masonic Temple which sits in the shadow of the Statehouse.

The session focused on policy, politics, philanthropy and the importance of creating relationships when advocating for the industry. NJBankers EVP/Director of Government Relations Mike Affuso discussed the Association’s lobbying efforts and also arranged for the group to tour the Statehouse so the discussion could come to life in the halls where relationships are forged. HUD Offers Grants to Clean Up Lead-Based Paint Hazards
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced that it is making grants available to help eliminate dangerous lead-based paint hazards from lower income homes in order to protect young children. Additionally, this funding will provide an opportunity for local communities to establish and support programs to control other housing-related health and safety hazards.

Inflation Expectations Rise in January
Results from the January 2017 Survey of Consumer Expectations (SCE) show an increase in one-year and three-year ahead inflation expectations, with both returning to levels last seen in the summer of 2015. Earnings growth expectations were stable in January, but expectations about both finding or losing a job and about the future unemployment rate all improved.
