New Jersey Bankers Association
ABA Government Relations Summit in Washington, DC
Michael P. Affuso, EVP/Director of Government Relations, NJBankers

Last week a delegation of NJBankers attended the ABA Government Relations Summit in Washington, DC.  The Summit had over 1,500 attendees and was the best attended Summit in my eight year tenure.  NJBankers brought nearly 25 bankers.

Bankers were feted with discussion from industry leaders and government leaders. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) discussed the need to save and the need for bipartisanship.  He also noted that banks should not be used to fund pet projects.  Senator Rounds (R-SD) spoke in support of the TAILOR Act as a means of helping banks better serve our customers and communities and noted that common sense changes are needed at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).  He also noted the need for bipartisanship and banker engagement.  House members also spoke.  Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee spoke in favor of the CHOICE Act and against the complexity of Dodd-Frank Act (DFA) with special focus on the compliance burden that the DFA creates.  Finally, Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA), the House Majority Whip discussed both tax reform and regulatory reform.  Regulators also addressed bankers in more intimate break-out sessions.

Our members also met with the New Jersey delegation on Capitol Hill.  We discussed the issues of the day for bankers but also discussed the state of the nation.  Many Congress members were struck by the seemingly rudderless ship of state.

NJBankers will also be attending the ICBA 2017 Capital Summit in early May. Your participation is strongly encouraged.

With the president stating flatly that “we’re going to be doing a big number on Dodd-Frank” shortly after being sworn in, it may come as no surprise that major news media outlets have described these early steps as a “rollback” of Dodd-Frank.
