In Memoriam

With sadness, we report the passing of Edmond Vincent Lawlor Jr., 87, of Redding, NJ, who passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at home surrounded by his family. He was with the New Jersey Savings League for 43 years, serving 22 years as president. We are also saddened to report the passing of Sonia (Avakian) Kafafian, 88, of Glen Rock, NJ, mother of Robert Kafafian, president & CEO of The Kafafian Group, who passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Edmond Vincent Lawlor Jr. formerly of Madison, N.J., and Normandy Beach, N.J., was born in South Orange, N.J. and attended Seton Hall Prep High School in West Orange, N.J., received a B.S. in economics and finance from Mount St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Md., and a master's of finance from Seton Hall University in 1961. After graduation from college, Ed, a combat veteran, fought in the Korean War as a second lieutenant in the Army.

Sonia Kafafian, born and reared in New York City, Sonia graduated from Christopher Columbus HS and worked at Metropolitan Life until she was wed in 1954.  Upon moving to New Jersey, she became active in her community.  Sonia was a member of the Glen Rock PTA, Women’s Club, Junior Football Association, Gourmet Club, was First Lady of the SIP organization, and Co-Founder of The Paper Dolls.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York Business Leaders Survey
Activity in the region’s service sector expanded modestly, according to firms responding to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s March 2018 Business Leaders Survey. The survey’s headline business activity index moved down five points to 11.2, pointing to a somewhat slower pace of growth than in February. The business climate index fell thirteen points to 7.7, signaling that firms, on balance, regarded the business climate as better than normal, though to a lesser extent than last month.

NY Fed: Consumers' Expectations Continue Improving
American consumers’ financial expectations improved in February, with 40.2 percent feeling they are better off than a year before, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s monthly Survey of Consumer Expectations -- reaching the highest point since the survey began in June 2013. Consumers expected their household income to grow by 3 percent over the next year, versus 2.8 percent a month before, and they expected their household spending to grow by 3 percent as well, up 0.1 percent from January's figure.
