NJBankers has once again commissioned a study with the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning & Public Policy to confirm the impact the banking industry has on NJ’s economy and provide an overview of recent industry employment trends in NJ and the nation.

Dr. James Hughes, University Professor/Dean Emeritus will present the findings of the study - "Contribution of the Commercial Banking and Savings Institutions Sectors to the New Jersey Economy,"  and moderate a panel with participants Kevin Cummings, President/CEO, Investors Bank; Christopher Maher, Chairman/President/ CEO, OceanFirst Bank and Donald J. Musso, President/CEO, FinPro on the panel.

Celebrating Ten Years of Speaking with One Voice

NJBankers is celebrating our 115th Anniversary of serving the New Jersey Banking Industry yet we are celebrating another milestone anniversary. In 2009, the legacy New Jersey Bankers Association and the New Jersey League of Community Bankers combined to serve our members and the banking industry as one, united voice. It took just about 100 years for the two organizations to combine but it was a natural time. The two associations’ interests aligned and it was time.

In this installment of NJBankers history, we reached back to the first issue of our magazine, New Jersey Banker, published as the combined association. At that time, our Co-Chairmen, Norman E. Beatty, chairman/president/CEO of First Hope Bank and John H. Wessling III, president /CEO of Haven Savings Bank penned their platforms as the new Co-Chairs of the unified association. Their words of wisdom stand true today as in 2009. So we thought we’d share the letters that were written in that first issue that celebrated speaking with one voice.

American Bankers Mutual Insurance Ltd. Declares $2 Million Distribution to ABA Member Banks

American Bankers Mutual Insurance, Ltd., the reinsurer for the directors and officers (D&O), bond and cyber insurance program endorsed by American Bankers Association (ABA) and New Jersey Bankers Association, declared a $2 million distribution to be shared by qualified ABA member banks insured through ABA Insurance Services. Thirty two New Jersey banks will share over $100,000.

OCC Warns about Counterfeit Official Bank Checks
Bremer Bank, St. Paul, MN has reported that counterfeit official bank checks using the bank’s routing number of 092005411 are being presented for payment nationwide in connection with a variety of online auction and job opportunity scams.

FHFA Issues Final Rule on Uniform Mortgage-Backed Securities
The Federal Housing Finance Agency has issued a final rule that requires Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to align programs, policies and practices that affect the cash flows of “To Be Announced” (TBA)-eligible Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS). The issuance of the final rule is a major step forward significantly improving the predictability of cash flows to MBS investors.

Transatlantic Partnership: Fighting Financial Crime
When the Director of FinCEN visited the Europol headquarters, a discussion ensued on how Europol and FinCEN can better work together to safeguard the international financial system from illicit use.

Philadelphia Fed Appoints New Members to Community Bank Advisory Council
The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia announced the appointments of Eric Hoerner, CEO of MidCoast Community Bancorp, Inc., based in Wilmington, DE, and Brian W. Jones, president/CEO and director of The First National Bank of Elmer in New Jersey, to its Community Depository Institutions Advisory Council. Hoerner and Jones will begin their three-year terms in March 2019.

Provident Bank and Fundation announced Tuesday the launch of a program to expand small business loan approvals for customers of the Jersey City-based bank. With the new feature, small businesses can apply for term loans ranging from $15,000 to $250,000 and lines of credit from $20,000 to $150,000 and receive funds in as soon as one business day.
