Banking Industry's Rising Stars Celebrated at NJBankers Award Ceremony

The NJBankers Rising Stars Award is granted to bankers, under the age of 40, to recognize the achievements that make them the Rising Stars of the Garden State banking industry. Award winners exhibit the characteristics of true leaders and are clearly outstanding professionals, mentors, teachers and colleagues.  They support bank and industry initiatives that strengthen communities and help neighbors. These Stars are nominated by their bank for the recognition.

There were 37 nominations that a panel of independent judges reviewed for choosing the 2019 Rising Stars. This year’s judges included George Callas, Chief Revenue Officer & National Sales Director, The Invictus Group; Maureen Kalena, VP, Relationship Manager, Federal Home Loan Bank of New York; William Nowik, Principal, Wolf & Co.; Dr. Cynthia Rowan, President, Performance Management Solutions and an instructor for the NJBankers Leadership Academy among other programs; and Sheryl Shara, VP/EFT Manager/Cash Management, Investors Bank, and a 2018 Rising Star. 

Wolf and Company was the evening’s presenting sponsor and has been a supporter and sponsor of this event since inception.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement made by George Callas of the Constantine G. Callas Progressive Educational and Work Ethic Memorial Scholarship. Named for his father, George is pleased to be able to offer this scholarship to enhance the careers of bankers as they seek higher learning opportunities. Details of the scholarship will be forthcoming. NJBankers thanks George for providing this opportunity to continue one’s education.

NJBankers President/CEO John McWeeney, Jr. opened the ceremony and introduced the emcee for the evening, Alan Lloyd, Principal in Wolf’s Audit Department who is responsible for managing a team of professionals to ensure that clients receive audit services that are tailored to their individual needs.

 We encourage all bank members to nominate a Rising Star for an award. Details will be released in September 2020.

Customer Preference for Digital Banking Continues to Grow
Nearly three quarters of Americans (73%) most often access their bank accounts via online and mobile channels, according to a new ABA/Morning Consult survey. Those who said they most frequently use their laptop or PC to access their bank account dropped over the past year from 42% to 37%, while 36% now say mobile is their go-to method, up from 30% a year ago.

The federal banking agencies jointly issued a final rule that provides for an optional, simplified measure of capital adequacy, the community bank leverage ratio framework, for qualifying community banking organizations, consistent with Section 201 of the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act. The final rule will be effective on January 1, 2020.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve Board (the agencies) jointly issued a final rule that permits insured depository institutions and depository institution holding companies to implement the simplifications to the capital rule on January 1, 2020, rather than April 1, 2020. These banking organizations may elect to use the revised effective date of January 1, 2020, or wait until the quarter beginning April 1, 2020.
On October 4, 2019, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Federal Reserve Board, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (collectively, the agencies), under the auspices of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), published proposed regulatory reporting changes in the Federal Register for public comment. These proposed changes apply to all three versions of the Call Report (FFIEC 031, FFIEC 041, and FFIEC 051) and to the Regulatory Capital Reporting for Institutions Subject to the Advanced Capital Adequacy Framework (FFIEC 101).

The banking agencies, under the auspices of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), have issued a Federal Register notice requesting comment on proposed capital-related reporting changes and other reporting revisions. These proposed changes and revisions apply to the Consolidated Reports of Condition and Income (Call Report) and to the Regulatory Capital Reporting for Institutions Subject to the Advanced Capital Adequacy Framework (FFIEC 101). Institutions are encouraged to comment on the proposal by December 3, 2019.
Bankers left commercial and industrial lending standards mostly unchanged amid weakening demand in the third quarter of 2019, according to the Federal Reserve’s latest Senior Loan Officer Survey. Banks reported tightening standards on commercial real estate loans while demand for those loans remained relatively unchanged. Residential real estate lending standards also remained unchanged, though respondents noted stronger demand.
