NJBankers Welcomes Jessica Furino

Jessica Furino has joined NJBankers as Vice President and Manager of Member Experiences. Jessica is a seasoned event planner who will be responsible for NJBankers professional development opportunities. She will be the liaison for the NJBankers Leadership Academy and is also tasked to explore and spearhead new initiatives including the Young Bankers Division designed to enhance member experience and engagement.  

Jessica’s experience includes having worked in the Development Department of The Salvation Army’s Executive Headquarters in Manhattan.  She continued to pursue her passion for event planning and joined The 92nd Street Y as their Special Events Associate, then as Meeting Planning Specialist for Hadassah.  Most recently, Jessica was responsible for planning large scale events across North America as the Director of Events for the Women Presidents’ Organization. 

She graduated from Lehigh University with a BA in English and Religion Studies.  While at Lehigh, she helped plan campus wide events as a member of the Association of Student Alumni.

Jessica currently serves as a Leader for the Lehigh University Club of New York City, as well as The Friends Academy Alumni Committee.  She can be reached at or extension 641.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York Empire State Manufacturing Survey
Business activity continued to grow at a fairly brisk pace in New York State, according to firms responding to the July 2018 Empire State Manufacturing Survey. The headline general business conditions index edged down by over two points to 22.6—still a high level, suggesting a continuation of robust growth.  

Federal Reserve Bank of New York Business Leaders Survey
Growth in the region’s service sector moderated somewhat but was still fairly brisk, according to firms responding to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s July 2018 Business Leaders Survey. The survey’s headline business activity index retreated seven points to 14.8, after reaching its highest level in more than a decade in June.

OCC Updates Comptroller’s Handbook Booklet on Capital, Dividends
The OCC has published a revised version of the “Capital and Dividends” booklet of the Comptroller’s Handbook. The revised booklet presents the regulatory framework and discusses the regulatory capital rules that define regulatory capital and establish minimum capital standards. It also provides guidance to examiners for assessing banks’ capital adequacy and compliance with capital and dividend regulations.

FDIC Issues FIL-40-2018  Regarding Call Reports
Burden-reducing revisions to all three versions of the Consolidated Reports of Condition and Income (Call Report) are taking effect as of the June 30, 2018, report date. These revisions result from efforts by the federal banking agencies to reduce data reporting and other burdens for institutions, particularly small institutions. The Call Report for second quarter 2018 must be submitted to the banking agencies' Central Data Repository (CDR) by Monday, July 30, 2018.

Fictitious Notification Regarding the Release of Funds Supposedly Under the Control of the OCC
Consumers have reported receiving fictitious e-mail messages, allegedly initiated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), regarding funds purportedly under the control of the OCC.

Valley National Bank Supports NJBankers 2018 Philanthropic Mission

This month nine Valley associates volunteered to serve lunch at Eva’s Community Kitchen in Paterson, New Jersey also in partnership with the New Jersey Bankers Association Philanthropy Program. On September 6th another group of Valley associates will head back to Eva’s Village to serve as mock interviewers in support of Eva’s Workforce Development, Education and Job Training programs.

In Memoriam

With great sadness, we report the passing of Roman T. Gumina, chairman and CEO of Brunswick Bank & Trust, age 58 years, who passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. We are also saddened to report that Michael Kepich, Director of United Roosevelt Savings Bank for the past 47 years and Chairman of the Board of Directors since 2002, age 91 years, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy.

McCarter & English launching pro bono program to help Newark residents
NJBankers Associate Member McCarter & English has found a new way to reinforce its commitment to its hometown of Newark. The firm has established a pro bono fellowship aimed at helping city residents cope with legal issues. The full-time, one-year renewable fellowship would see an attorney come on board in the fall, initially working on behalf of tenants facing eviction.

In this survey, presented by Associate Member ARC Risk and Compliance, they explore what institutions are doing to bring themselves up to speed to comply with the  established FinCEN CDD (Beneficial Ownership) rule.

Zero-In Team Making a Difference
Zero-In staffers in the NY and NJ offices have had a busy summer so far! From bench painting in Madison Square Park, to house painting with Habitat for Humanity, and running a 5k in Central Park, the team has been getting out into the community and making a difference.

Former Bank CEO Matthew P. Prosseda Joins The Kafafian Group
The Kafafian Group, Inc. announced the hiring of Matthew P. Prosseda as a Managing Director. For the past seven years, Prosseda served as CEO of a Pennsylvania-based community bank. During his tenure, the high-performing community bank averaged an ROA of 1.1%, an ROE of 9.8%, and an efficiency ratio of 57%.
