EPA Names First Multifamily Energy Stars

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently revealed the list of the first existing apartment communities to earn ENERGY STAR certification. Seventeen multifamily communities, a number of which are owned or managed by NMHC member firms, received the new certification for their commitment to saving energy while reducing costs, preventing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing affordability.

“Communities, renters and businesses all benefit when multifamily properties operate more efficiently,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy in a press release. “When these buildings use less energy, they also prevent greenhouse gas emissions, increase comfort, and lower costs for renters, making it a win-win for the environment, public health and the economy.”

Technology Helps Apartment Firms Tackle Package Delivery Crunch

It takes more than a tracking number to get billions in online sales to the nation’s 37 million apartment residents. In fact, one in four apartment communities use specialized software just to manage residents’ packages on site, according to the new National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) and Kingsley Associates 2014 Package Delivery Survey.

The survey also showed that a typical apartment community receives as many as 100 packages a week–a number that can double during the holidays. With Cyber Monday right around the corner, many apartment firms are bracing for the next big wave of package deliveries.
