Largest PR Campaign for Apartments in Industry's History

On March 10, NMHC and its partner, the National Apartment Association, launched the new and next phase of our award-winning pro-apartment campaign. This includes powerful tools and resources that support the multifamily industry and individual apartment firms directly.

First, we now know that apartments and their residents contribute $1.3 trillion annually to the economy, supporting 12.3 million jobs nationwide. This data is from new research by Dr. Stephen S. Fuller of George Mason University's Center for Regional Analysis as a follow up to his landmark research report in 2013.

These compelling numbers attest to just how important the apartment industry is to our national economy. You can find all the information at WeAreApartments.org. While you're there, take time to explore how many jobs and what kind of economic impact apartments support in your Congressional district, state or in 40 metro areas across the country.

In addition, you can now calculate the economic impact of a potential new apartment development or existing community for any one of 40 metros or 50 states. Just use the Apartment Community Estimator (A.C.E.) and take the results to your next planning and zoning meeting.

These exciting steps are part of the largest PR effort in the history of our industry. We’ve done media outreach in more than 40 cities to generate positive news coverage about apartments. In addition, we're sending this to every single Congressional House and Senate office, key administration officials, housing policy organizations and other important constituencies. New advertising also began running this week to further tell the story of the dollars and jobs apartments bring to communities. Stay tuned for more information.

NGBS Leads Green Market

The National Green Building Standard (NGBS) is now the leading standard for sustainability adopted developers of housing, according to data from Home Innovation Research Labs.

NGBS, a building standard created by the National Association of Home Builders, beat out both regional standards, like Earthcraft and Green Built, and other national standards like Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Homes.

“Many folks who should be more knowledgable about green rating standards often overlook the NGBS,” says Eileen Lee, vice president for energy and environmental policy for the National Multifamily Housing Council.
