Tax Reform Discussions Feature Prominently at NMHC Annual Meeting

As the tax reform debate heats up in Congress, NMHC hosted several sessions at the 2017 Annual Meeting to discuss the potential impact of changes to the tax code on the multifamily industry. Led by NMHC Tax Committee Chairman Tom Moran, Chairman, Moran & Company, and Robert Schachat, Ernst & Young, industry leaders solicited member input on the House Republican tax reform Blueprint during the joint Tax/Finance Committee meeting and the Board of Directors breakfast.

NMHC hosted the 2017 Annual Meeting in San Diego in late January. The meeting brought together leaders of the apartment industry from across the country for three days of networking, information sharing and discussions around the state of the sector.

EB-5 Program Updates Proposed, Congress Signals Support

A federal agency released a proposed rule on January 13, 2017, to change EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program regulations to reflect statutory updates, codify existing policies and alter certain aspects of the EB-5 program in need of reform.

IRS Proposes Regulations Overhauling Audits of Partnerships

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on January 18, 2017, proposed new regulations that would overhaul how partnerships are audited. While these rules have since been withdrawn per President Trump’s ordering a pause on all new regulations, it is uncertain whether they will ever be implemented. However, since partnerships play such a central role in the multifamily industry and because this version of the regulations will likely provide a baseline if these rules are ultimately finalized, it is worth understanding how these regulations could impact the auditing of partnerships if enacted.

NMHC Legislative Priorities Survey Results Show Tax and Finance Are Major Policy Priorities for Membership

NMHC conducted a survey in December to learn what legislative issues were most important for our members. Individuals representing a wide variety of NMHC member firms responded. Tax policy and Finance and Capital Markets were the two public policy issues that respondents ranked as most important. Almost two-thirds of respondents listed comprehensive tax reform as “very important”, while GSEs and housing finance reform were identified as very important by 80 percent of respondents within in the Finance and Capital Markets policy area.

NMHC PAC Chairwoman Sue Ansel of Gables Residential, completed her first year at the helm with a record-breaking 2016! The PAC receipts totaled just under $1.6 million with 165 member firms supporting NMHC PAC and 1,702 individuals investing their hard-earned dollars in the PAC. The success of 2016 underscores that NMHC members understand a well-funded PAC is a key tool for advocating on behalf of the apartment industry. NMHC PAC helps educate elected officials so they have a thorough grasp of our issues and understand the important role multi-housing plays in the U.S. economy.
