Engineers Week 2009 Kicks Off this Month

Engineers Week 2009, scheduled for February 15–21, kicks off with a new initiative to track the time engineers spend serving the profession outside of their full-time jobs. Engineers across the nation can help advance the profession by mentoring students and volunteering with organizations that help young people develop STEM skills.

To draw attention to the time engineers and others spend giving back and to encourage the achievement of a million hours of service, the National Engineers Week Foundation has launched the Million Hours of STEM Outreach Campaign. Engineers can log on to a designated Web site to track their hours contributed through December 31, 2009. EWeek 2009 is cochaired by Intel Corp. and NSPE, which launched the annual week of outreach activities in 1951.

Alliance Builds Support for Software Engineering PE Exam

During the past year, the Software Engineering Licensure Consortium has been promoting the importance of software engineering licensure for work that affects the public health, safety, and welfare. Recently, the consortium was able to survey 3,500 IEEE Computer Society members on the topic and results showed that there is a high interest in licensure and a software engineering-specific PE exam. Of the 781 respondents, three out of five said that software engineers practicing in areas that affect the public health, safety, and welfare should be licensed and a path to licensure that follows the NCEES Model Law should be developed for software engineers.

For more survey results, read the full article in your Jan/Feb 2009 PE magazine.
