GM Teams With University of Michigan To Create Auto Research School

General Motors and the University of Michigan have joined forces to create a new school dedicated to the research and development of automobiles. The Institute of Automotive Research and Education will focus on developing next-generation vehicles and finding new energy sources to help power new high-efficiency automobiles. The new school comes in addition to the Advanced Battery Coalition for Drivetrains (ABCD), a program announced in February aimed at studying the electrification of vehicle drivetrains.

ABCD is part of the Michigan College of Engineering master’s program in Energy Systems Engineering, but the Institute of Automotive Research and Education will offer its own individual degree. The new institute will focus on the research of advanced batteries, fuel-efficient engine systems, smart materials, and improved manufacturing processes.
