St. Louis Wins Global Membership Recruitment Award at Fall Conference!
The Association of Corporate Counsel Chapter of St. Louis (ACC STL) received the Chapter Achievement 2018 Membership / Recruitment Award at the global Annual Meeting of the Association for Corporate Counsel (ACC) held Oct. 21-24 in Austin.

The award is given to the chapter that experienced an increase in overall membership with a well-executed membership campaign. Nancy McCahan, 2018 ACC STL Membership Chairperson, and Managing General Counsel, Sugar Creek Capital designed a three-step membership initiative. Current ACC STL officers and board members attended the global ACC meeting to accept the award.

“This is such a great honor for the St. Louis chapter. Nancy and her membership committee did an amazing job this year. The dedication, involvement and leadership of the board, committee members and individual member contributions is what makes our chapter strong,” said Toni Douaihy, JD, 2018 ACC STL President, and Macy’s Vice President and Assistant General Counsel.

In 2017, the ACC STL was selected as one of 14 chapters globally to receive the Gold Level Award in the ACC Chapter Recognition Program. This award recognizes the Chapter’s accomplishments in areas including programming, membership recruitment, diversity and governance / operations.

Pro Bono and Community Service Day

Supporting Pro Bono

October is National Pro Bono Month, and the St. Louis Chapter’s Pro Bono Committee continues to develop Pro Bono opportunities for our members.

Our Chapter works with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri’s Community Economic Development Program, which provides free business legal assistance to entrepreneurs who are starting or expanding small businesses that provide a benefit to the lower-income communities that LSEM serves and to non-profit entities that promote community development to benefit people who are low-income. Our members have opportunities to support these efforts and make an impact in our community.

•    ACC St. Louis volunteers staff monthly Nonprofit Legal Clinics at LSEM where our members meet with prospective LSEM clients for brief one-on-one sessions to respond to questions they may have on legal issues they confront in the formation or management of a community business or nonprofit organization.

•    Members can also engage in one-on-one legal representation of LSEM CED clients for start-up and existing enterprises on discrete business law matters.  The client representations are limited to discrete projects and are not intended to be open-ended.
•    Plans are underway for a Business Legal Clinic focused on entrepreneurs on October 25, during Pro Bono week.   Watch for more details on this opportunity.

For National Healthcare Decisions Day on April 16, 2018, we collaborated with LSEM and Gold Sponsor Husch Blackwell, to offer a pro bono clinic to patients of the Family Care Health Center in the City of St. Louis. That morning, volunteer attorneys participated in a free CLE on Pro Bono Lawyering in Providing Durable Powers of Attorney for Healthcare and Healthcare Directive Forms, followed by a three-hour pro bono clinic in the afternoon to assist low-income individuals in completing healthcare directives.

Letter from the President
Toni Douaihy
Fall PRESIDENT’S LETTER

As I reflect over the year so far, I take great pride in all our Chapter’s accomplishments in 2018.   But most of all, I am excited that our membership has increased by nearly 10% -  we are now  609 members strong!  This membership growth creates the opportunity for all of us to build broader and stronger networks for ourselves and our colleagues.  By engaging with other members and supporting them in their careers, we all benefit.  So I encourage you to join us for a CLE or a social event, and make a point to meet someone new, learn more about that person and think about what you have to offer that person.  Perhaps you can offer advice or just an empathetic ear.  Perhaps you can introduce that person to another member who could be a valuable connection.   Or perhaps you can become a mentor to a less experienced member.   Doing any of these things can have a surprisingly important positive impact on the individual you are helping.  And when all of us support each other, our community is a richer and more rewarding place to be.

Our membership includes not only those lawyers currently employed in house, but also retired in-house counsel and in-house counsel who are “in transition.”  These members are invaluable to the rest of our community and invariably are generous in sharing their experiences.  If you know someone who has retired from in-house practice and wants to remain connected with the in-house community, they can become a member at a significantly discounted membership fee.  And for those in transition, the ACC will waive the annual membership fee for up to one year, enabling these lawyers to take advantage of our strong network of in-house counsel and our in transition resources and programs.  Look for links on our web page for more information about retiree membership and the in-transition fee waiver.

If you want to maximize the benefits of your ACC membership and grow your network, join us for one of the many upcoming events listed on our web page.  We have some great CLEs coming up, as well as our Sponsor Appreciation Event in early November and our Holiday Social in early December.

Here’s to all the Board members, Committee members and volunteers who have shown incredible dedication to our organization this year, making it one of the best chapters on the globe.  And wishing all our chapter members and sponsors many successes over the coming weeks and months!
