Fall Greetings from the New President

A Warm Fall Welcome to North East Members,

The changing of the seasons is well underway in the North East, and we welcome the beauty of the fall season with its glorious colors of the fall foliage.  Take some time during this busy season to find some inspiration in nature and the outdoors that you can bring into your work room.

Since coming into office at Symposium in July, I have been communicating with many of our North East members, who are enthusiastically preparing for several events in the upcoming months.  Our fall design show, coordinated by Theresa Colucci AIFD PFCI, was held on Oct. 15th at Alders Wholesale in Campbell Hall, NY.  Designers Dan Vaughn AIFD, Ken Norman AIFD, PFCI and Ron Mulray AIFD presented a ‘Magnificent Holiday Trends’ show, inspiring attendees for the upcoming holiday season with an educational evening full of chic, vintage, and rustic glam for the holidays. An auction to benefit our scholarship fund was held following dinner and the design show.

Chairperson Sue Weisser AIFD, with Co-Chairs Dan Vaughn AIFD and Deryck de Matas AIFD, have plans well underway for the AIFD exhibit at the spring 2014 Philadelphia Flower Show.  The theme of our exhibit is based on ‘Korean Culture’, and the team is working with curators from The Philadelphia Museum of Art. PFS liaison Ron Mulray AIFD and Claire Won Kang AIFD are assisting them with their expertise in the field. Designers and volunteers from all chapters are welcome to contact Ron Mulray at ronmulray@aol.com or Sue Weisser @ syergerweisser@gmail.com to participate. We will have more updates on the show in the near future, and look forward to their exciting vision.

David Siders AIFD and Rudy Grant AIFD have graciously extended an invitation to all North East members to Sunday brunch at their home on October 27th for a social gathering to meet and get acquainted with other NERC members. It is a great opportunity to chat, exchange ideas and share our passion for our industry. I hope to greet many of you there and meet more members. I have included their invitation and RSVP information below in the newsletter.

Two important goals on our board’s agenda this coming year are these:
1. To encourage more active participation and involvement from all members within our region.
If you ever  considered participating as a member of our board, now is the perfect time to get involved and submit your name for nominations. We welcome new fresh faces and ideas to shape the future of our chapter.  More detailed information is included in the newsletter; if you feel you are able to meet the responsibilities and requirements of a board position, please contact Lisa Greene or me with any questions and to submit your name as a candidate. If you are not up to a board position, offer your help in some way at one of our chapter functions is always needed.
2. For better and floral education and mentoring to prospective CFD & AIFD members, students and professional florists.
We are undertaking a new regional endeavor this spring with representing AIFD  at the North East Floral Expo (CFA) in Mystic, CT.  We are doing a main-stage educational program, and also having a booth at the trade fair representing AIFD.  Theresa Colucci is also heading up the coordination of this show The designers have been secured for the show, but we will need several volunteers to help with the trade show, which is being coordinated by Janet Black and Deryck de Matas. Please keep this project in mind if you are planning on attending the show, we are counting on your support to make this a successful event and spread our mission for AIFD.

My very best wishes to all members for a prosperous and enjoyable fall season as we prepare for the holidays.  If you need to contact me, please email me at pollyb.aifd@zoominternet.net with any questions, concerns. If you would like to participate in one of our upcoming events, please contact me. With teamwork, we can make great things happen for our chapter!

Sincerely,
Polly Berginc AIFD
North East Chapter President

Seneca College - Trillium Chapter SAIFD News
SAIFD AIR PROGRAM: PRESENTATION AND SEMINAR

The SAIFD Trillium Chapter hosted the annual Air Program in February of this year, with Guest Designer  Inta Taurins AIFD, CAFA.  The theme for the presentation was ‘Tropicals and Beyond’.

Inta has been a member of the floral industry in Canada for many years.  She has been involved in numerous Floral Design shows and panels and is giving workshops at various institutions throughout the city and throughout the country.  Her design skills are evident in many floral industry showrooms, on catalogue covers, and in publications. Inta is also actively involved in teaching seminars and workshops in the city and across the country. She has also been a guest designer and presenter  on numerous industry shows  which featured   very energetic runway shows.  Her workshop focused on the creation of dynamic, visually exciting floral arrangements with unusual foliage and Exotic Floral materials.

Designer Inta Taurins AIFD, CAFA shares her talents and knowledge with the Trillium Chapter students.

Inta stressed that using traditional greens and foliages in non-traditional ways challenges the designer to expand his/her notions of what constitutes an “arrangement”.  Inta demonstrated some very innovative  and contemporary floral techniques, such as weaving and binding grasses.  She  showed the students how to bring extra colour into these weaving components with a simple curling ribbon woven with the Lily grass, and used as a featured component within the design.

The second part of her presentation included a hands-on workshop with the SAIFD members who were so excited to experiment with the techniques Inta was demonstrating. Students experimented with Pin Cushion Proteas, grasses, seeded Eucalyptus and a selection of foliage and created their own concepts.
Inta’s workshop was a great success and every student was filled with new inspiration.

March 12th, the Trillium Chapter invited a guest speaker who graduated from the Floral Design Program in 2009, and since then established her own company “Flora Technics”, in a community outside of Toronto. Jessalyn  is also a former SAIFD member and competitor. She was invited to talk to the group about her journey in establishing her own company with her sister. She spoke to the students about some of the many challenges they were facing before they were able to open the doors of the new business.  Everyone was very curious and excited to ask all these so important questions in regards to the many details we need to consider in our industry.

April 10th the Chapter participated in a Floral Exhibit which took place at the Japanese Cultural Centre and was part our Departments Year End Fashion Show. The Student Competition in Las Vegas was another exciting event, in which the students presented very well.
