Holiday Greetings from our President

Happy Holidays!

A Warm Holiday Greeting to all North East Members,

The holiday season is upon us, and as I welcome this busy time of year, I also love to spend evenings in front of a warm fire reflecting on this past year, and optimistically planning for 2014. My time as your chapter president is nearing the mid-term point, and I am so grateful and blessed to have the support of such a dedicated and hard working board this year.  These members truly care; and together as a team, are dedicated to promoting the field of professional floral design, and providing more educational opportunities for students and designers yearning to improve their skills. We still have much to accomplish, but I feel we are on track with our goals, and look forward with enthusiasm to our upcoming regional events. Together, we are making a difference in the future of our chapter. If you are not active within our region, now is the time to join in, meet new acquaintances, and become part of our chapter’s future.

The North East Chapter’s Fall Design Show, coordinated by Theresa Colucci AIFD PFCI, was warmly received by the large number of attendees at Alders Wholesale in Campbell Hall, NY on October 15th.  Designers Dan Vaughn AIFD, Ron Mulray AIFD, and Ken Norman AIFD PFCI each presented their dazzling visions from rustic chic to holiday glam, from autumn seasonal thru New Year’s décor.  Proceeds from the auction following the program benefited our Scholarship fund.  My sincere appreciation to Theresa and her team of designers and volunteers for a wonderful educational evening of inspiring holiday décor, and for their dedication, hard work, and efforts.

The week ending the Philadelphia Flower Show, March 8-9th, 2014, our Chapter will also be represented at the North East Floral Expo in Mystic, CT.  Theresa Colucci and Michael Derouin are coordinating this new venture, along with the support of many members from our chapter. We look forward to our on-stage educational design program with designers Bev McClure AIFD, Al De Luca AIFD, and Tim Walker AIFD. We will also be well represented with a unique floral display at our NERC trade show booth, coordinated by Deryck de Matas and Janet Black. Our hope is to educate and encourage florists and students to seek membership in our organization and to mentor and offer support if needed. We truly need regional member support of this important project, and will be needing volunteers to help at our booth. If you are planning on attending the show, please contact Janet Black or Deryck de Matas to volunteer a couple hours of your time during that day.

This is the season of giving; some of the most memorable gifts I have ever received were gifts from the heart; an act of kindness or a thoughtful gesture, an unexpected call or note from a dear friend. As your mailbox fills up with holiday cards from across the miles, may you appreciate how easily distances are shortened between the hearts of caring people. And may you realize what a valuable gift you give when you truly give of yourself and your talents.

Wishing all of our North East Members here and abroad a wonderful holiday season, and a prosperous and Happy New Year!

Polly Berginc AIFD
North East Chapter President

International Pointsettia Day
Did you know itís International Poinsettia Day (12th December)?

Why not celebrate by making some fabulously festive poinsettia arrangements, and offering your customers an irresistible Christmas decoration or gift? You can use the whole plants, or they make fabulous cut flowers*. And low-cost, high-impact poinsettias are also ideal for corporate and event work!

There are four excellent new films on the Stars for Europe website www.sfe-web.com with heaps of simple but incredibly effective new ideas for working with poinsettias, and displaying them in your shop. It’s like having your very own Christmas demonstration on your computer screen.

We dare you to watch them and not immediately want to get playing with fairy lights, bullion wire, pinecones, cinnamon sticks, baubles, gold foil, ribbon, twigs… and of course the star of the show… poinsettias!

Why not make a cup of tea and settle down to check out http://www.sfe-web.com/en/Fachhandelsfilme and get inspired?

*Just make sure you sear the stems in a flame or boiling water and they'll last for absolutely ages!

News from the SAIFD Chapter in Cobleskill New York

This October the students from the State University of NY at Cobleskill had some fun doing an art installation at the college.

The students were asked to provide décor for the "Orange Carpet Reception", this event  recognizes faculty and staff for outstanding achievements.  The students designed vases of fresh flowers for the tables and chose to create a vertical floral art piece which was on display for the event.

Most of the foliage was cut from the greenhouses on campus.  The art piece was moved after the event to another area of the college for all to view.

The Grand Gala Opening of the event will take place on the Thursday evening, April 3rd, 2014PAFA IN BLOOM will then be open to the public Friday, Saturday and Sunday - April 4th - 6th.  We will be creating the large-scale pieces on Wednesday, April 2nd and from 8am through 1pm, Thursday, April 3rd.  These floral interpretations will all take place in The Historic Landmark Building.  For added interest to our inaugural event - we will not only be asking designers to interpret art from their permanent and featured collections but also of the buildings vast collection of sculptures and original architecture.

As an added bonus, PAFA IN BLOOM will be presenting two Guest Speakers for Presentations and Master Classes.

For those who commit to participation in this project, PAFA will be holding a second Selection Day on Monday, January 13th, 2014 for a private tour of the museum and a view of the permanent and featured collections that will be available for inspiration.  The first Selection Day has already proven a success and this will be the second and final chance to make onsite choices.  After that, the final works will be assigned to the remaining designers and garden clubs unable to attend the event or visit the museum on their own.  Each designer is individually responsible for supplying their own containers, supplies flowers, labor and transportation.  All designers will be given a pedestal or floor space and signage to promote their individual businesses and Garden Clubs.  All maintenance for the exhibits will be performed by Schaffer Designs.

MANAGING SOCIAL NETWORKS....HOOTSUITE
Are you finding that managing your Facebook, Twitter, Google & and other social media tools rather time consuming? We take a look at hootsuite...a social network mangaer that could just help....

Did you know that your use of Social Media is not only important to engage with new and current customers, but Google rates those who actively use social media higher.  For example, two florists: 1 has a Facebook business page and a Twitter account which they update weekly with really interesting and inspiring information; the other florist has a Facebook page but rarely add anything.  Google will actively promote the first as they themselves are engaging with their customers.

Of course this takes time...but remember, social media is free. It is not going to cost you a penny.

But time is precious and posting on one social media platform is often all you can cope with at the end of a long day.

This is wherehootsuite comes in.  It allows you to manage all your social media from hootsuite. The dashboard allows you to post your social message over multiple networks...meaning you did not have to login into each one individually.

You can also view and reply to posts on your social media and view analytics.

You can setup a free account to manage a maximum of 5 social networks.  For example, Twitter, Linked In, Facebook, Google+ and even your WordPress blog.

The free account is for one user.  You can pay for additional services and users but to be honest the free version should be enough for most of you.

For more information visit
