Indigenous to Mexico and Central America, the Poinsettia was introduced into the United States in 1828. Poinsettias are popular Christmas decorations in homes, churches, offices, and elsewhere across North America. The plant's association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus' birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson "blossoms" sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias.

Telltale signs of color are beginning to show in the bract, or colored portion of the plant which is actually a leaf. Longer nights, longer periods of darkness, at least 12 hours at a time, are necessary for color development. At the same time, the plants need sufficient light during the day for the brightest color.

Raised under controlled conditions, light and temperature play a big part in ensuring that the peak bloom time occurs at the proper time of the season.

The Mischler's Poinsettias are right on schedule!

Easy Care Gardening Indoors
Succulents Galore

While everything’s sleeping outside, bring some life into your home with succulents.

From  the well-known aloe vera to strange sedums and kooky crassulas, there’s one to fit every style.

We have nearly one hundred different varieties in stock here at Mischler’s. This month, we’ll focus on those with striking colors and shapes.

Lavender Scallops (Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi) features ridged, pink-and-white-tinted leaves. Or try ‘Ace’ (Senecio crassissimus) if purple is more your color. ‘Campfire’ (Crassula coccinea) has bright red leaf edges that contrast green centers.

Firesticks (Euphorbia tirucalli) can get 4’ tall while String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) drapes 2’ or more over the pot’s edge. There are several varieties of aloe, each with pointed leaves and some with colorful spines. ‘Hobbit’ (Crassula portulacea) has leaves curled into tube shapes.

This is only a small part of our selection of succulents. In next month’s newsletter, we’ll showcase some “cute” varieties, those that might interest children or anyone into miniature gardening.
