Prom Flowers

Need help selecting the perfect prom flowers for that perfect date?

The Prom is such an important time in the life of a high school Junior or Senior that often they are not sure what to do.

Tradition has it that the young man buys his date a corsage. This could be a traditional style or a wrist corsage. The color of the girl's dress can be helpful to the florist when making your flower choice.

Tradition also has the young lady purchasing a boutonniere for her date.  The usual flower is a rose boutonniere, and sometimes the rose is accented with other flowers.

Container Gardening Tips

Almost anything that can hold soil can be used for container gardening.  You can use a classic terra cotta pot or a pair of old boots.  Look at things you have on hand with a gardener’s point of view.  Just remember, any container used for gardening must have drainage and that means you may have to add holes.

Always use soil that has been blended for container use.  The package should tell you that it is a suitable mix for containers.  Do not use topsoil or soil from your garden.  The soil must be lightweight with good texture and drainage ability.  It is a good idea to add slow release fertilizer to the mix at the rate recommended on the package.  You can also add water absorbing polymer-gel crystals to the mix (again at the package recommended rate) to help the container hold moisture.  To reduce the final weight of a large pot, you can put a 2-6 inch layer of Styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom before adding the soil mix.

There is nothing wrong with having a container of a single type of plant, but for a more lush appearance, mix your plants.  A simple design technique for a mixed container is:

           1. Have a vertical centerpiece – the heart of the container is an upright plant. This could be a canna, an ornamental grass or a vine trained on a trellis.

           2. Arrange cascading plants around the pot’s outer edge.  They can be flowering plants or foliage plants.  A mix of both gives a nice look.  The plants will spill over the sides of the pot and soften the edge.  Some of the plants you could use are ivy, sweet potato vine, verbena or petunias.

           3. Plant the remaining space with a mix of “fillers,” such as coleus, geraniums, and salvia.  These plants supply the color and body of your container.

Your choice of plants is not limited in any way.  Annuals, perennials, flowering bulbs, ornamental grasses, even small shrubs and trees can be used.

Container gardens do require diligent watering, since they can dry out quickly in hot dry weather.  Hanging baskets are especially susceptible to drying out since they have air all around them and the wind can also have an impact.  It is a good idea to get in the habit of checking your containers on a daily basis.  You will get to know how quickly things dry out and will have a better idea of how often they need to be watered.  If the soil in a pot is dry at least an inch down you can safely water it.  Hanging baskets may need watering twice a day on really hot days.

Even if you place a slow release fertilizer in the soil mix, it is a good idea to fertilize your containers and baskets periodically with a water-soluble fertilizer such as Jack's Classic.  It should be applied every 10-14 days.

Be creative, have fun and think of Mischler's for your container gardening needs!
