Michael Seeger of Fife Flowers in Fife, Wash., sent us the following in response to our coverage of Streamlined Sales Tax, which was featured in the June 27 issue of E-Brief and the August issue of Dateline.
"I am aware that you, FTD, Teleflora, 1-800-Flowers.com, and a few other groups are involved with the SST initiative that is progressing through our country today. SST is coming to each state soon -- like it or not. Sales tax on wire orders is an issue that is huge to FTD, Teleflora, and 1-800-Flowers.com.
"I believe that SST may be a killer for individual florists and they are not aware. Sales tax may be computed and collected in accord with the "DESTINATION" of the delivery. So ... for each delivery a destination address tax code shall have to be found in order to properly ring up a sale! Then, at the end of the month, the sales taxes collected may have to be tabulated and reported by tax code to the local revenue department. I pray what I am learning now is not going to come to fruition. The major concern I have is not for the big wire guys -- my concern is for the shops. This could be a paperwork nightmare!"
Note from SAF: As reported in the recent issue of E-Brief SAF is continuing to work with the Streamlined Sales Tax Project to allow florists to continue to collect tax on the origin of the order instead of the destination of the order.
