Flower Power Gets Media Hits

Bridal Guide promotes flower power.

Brides-to-be, financial planners and medical professionals are reading about why they should start their day with flowers.

• Bridal Guide magazine offers marriage advice in its November/December issue: "Need a mood boost? Put blooms in your room. Harvard psychologists have discovered that flowers provide us with a mental lift. They also make us feel kinder towards others, so place a vase packed with buds where you and your partner can see it first thing in the morning-and visualize a beautiful day ahead."

• SmartMoney.com published the news: "Recent research confirms that flowers might be the perfect pick-me-up for millions of Americans who do not consider themselves 'morning people.' Participants of a behavioral study conducted by researchers at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital confirmed that they feel least positive in the early hours but reported being happier and more energetic after looking at flowers first thing in the morning."

• NewsRx, a newsletter publisher for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries printed the flower news in Pharma Business Week, Health & Medicine Week, Life Science Weekly, Science Letter, Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week and Biotech Week: "'The morning blahs, it turns out, is a real phenomenon, with positive moods — happiness, friendliness and warmth, for example — manifesting much later in the day,' says lead researcher Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D. 'Interestingly, when we placed a small bouquet of flowers into their morning routines, people perked up.'"

These news articles are a direct result of the Home Ecology of Flowers public relations campaign commissioned by an alliance of SAF and the Flower Promotion Organization (FPO). Conducted at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, the "Home Ecology of Flowers Study" demonstrates that flowers make us feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety, and feel less depressed when fresh cut flowers are present in the home. The SAF/FPO Alliance launched the campaign in October 2006.

A second SAF/FPO PR campaign launched in early October 2007, promoting the study's findings about seeing flowers first in the morning.

Generate publicity for your shop. SAF members can access customizable press releases on the benefits of morning flowers and the results of the Home Ecology of Flowers Study.
