California Flower Market Stays Put

Local news and industry rumors of a move or closure prompted The California Flower Market (CFM), part owners of the historic San Francisco Flower Mart, to state in a press release that it will continue to do business, despite the impending sale of the western half of the Mart, owned by the San Francisco Flower Growers Association (SFFGA).

"The California Flower Market is not contemplating closing or relocating the Mart operations," says Bob Otsuka, executive vice president and general manager of CFA. "It is our goal to continue Mart operations with minimal impacts on our trade customer, the Flower Mart Badgeholder."

The sale of the SFFGA portion will displace about 25 flower vendors, says Otsuka, who adds that CFM has been able to make accommodations for seven of those vendors to continue operations of its side of the Mart.

E-brief reported on the sale, which is still in contract, of the SFFGA's section of Flower Mart to the Academy of Art University. While SFFGA's part of the market includes the parking lot, Otsuka says that he is "in talks with the buyer of the property to try to maintain access to the parking lot area."
