Big Floral Spender: Nancy Pelosi

Congress might not be too pleased with the 63 percent spending increase from the office of the Speaker since Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) assumed the post in January 2007 — but there’s one outfit that loves her spending choices: the floral industry.

According to an article in The Hill (a Capitol Hill newspaper), since her elevation to the Speaker post, Pelosi has spent $16,000 on flowers.

Nadeam Elshami, Pelosi’s spokesman said in the article that the majority of the $16,058 spent on flowers “was for the visits of foreign dignitaries, such as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Jordan’s King Abdullah.” The article further reported that spending on flowers isn’t anything new for Pelosi. When she was minority leader in 2006 she spent about $5,000 on flowers.

And, further proof that Pelosi is a big believer in flowers? Turn to a TIME Magazine profile that states “among Democrats in Washington, Pelosi became popular for her prodigious fund raising on behalf of colleagues and her gracious manners; she’s often the first person to send flowers if a member’s spouse is sick.”
