Secretary of Commerce to Speak at SAF Congressional Action Days

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez

Floral industry members will get face time with top cabinet official Carlos Gutierrez, during SAF's 28th Annual Congressional Action Days, Feb. 25-26, 2008. SAF has secured the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, known as the "voice of business in the government," to speak at a special working session Monday, Feb. 25. His comments, which will focus on immigration reform, trade and the economy, will be followed by a question-and-answer session during which attendees can talk about how to address those issues during their legislative visits on Tuesday.

"This is an amazing opportunity to get an insider perspective and some real answers on important industry issues," says SAF Government Relations Chairman Kevin Priest, AAF, of Cleveland Plant & Flower Company in Parma, Ohio.

Earlier that morning, at the Congressional Action Days Kickoff Breakfast, attendees will hear election year insights from veteran journalist Chris Wallace. Host of the Sunday morning public affairs program Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, Wallace has interviewed some of today's most powerful politicians, including all of the leading contenders for the 2008 presidential campaign.

Also on Monday, the schedule includes in-depth training in lobbying techniques and strategies, plus a chance to develop a real understanding of how legislators think.

Returning this year is former Hill staff member and professional lobbyist trainer Brad Fitch, who will share state-specific lobbying strategies with attendees during a working lunch. After lunch, attendees will be further immersed in the legislative process during "Congressional Insights," an exciting, interactive program where they'll learn exactly what kind of pressure legislators face and how to communicate clearly to get their messages across.

Congressional Action Days entertainment will include the Capitol Steps, a group of former Hill staffers that "puts the 'mock' in Democracy" with their irreverent songs and skits, performing at the SAFPAC Reception and Dinner on Feb. 25.

Capping off the two exciting days will be the popular Congressional Reception, where veterans will find something new this time. In addition to the jaw-dropping floral displays decorating the room, our legislative guests will have a chance to see some of the country's top floral designers create unique arrangements for local charities.
