'Preservation Celebration' Takes Top Prize at Rose Parade
Public appreciation for all things sustainable may be evident in the judges' pick for the grand prize winner at the 2008 Rose Parade — The opulent, Indian-inspired "Preservation Celebration" float captured this Sweepstakes Trophy at the Jan. 1 Rose Parade.
The winning float, entered by irrigation company Rain Bird, featured eight waterfalls, cascading 1,500 gallons of recycled water, says the company's Web site.
Designed and constructed by Fiesta Parade Floats, the float featured cascading flowers and Bengal tigers made out of orange strawflower and black onion seed, peacocks of white carnation petals and purple Madame Pompadour dendrobium orchids, and monkeys of palm fiber and pharmitas grass lounging beneath temple ruins.

Lisa Weddel, AIFD, PFCI, of L. Weddel Design in Highland Ranch, Colo., one of the design team leaders for the float, attributes the success to her team members. "I had such great designers," she says. "We kicked [the floral decorations in the float] out so fast."
FTD, which won the Sweepstakes last year with its "Jewels of Nature" float, this year won the Tournament Trophy: Special Exceptional Merit in Multiple Categories (Include Floats Over 55 feet), for its Mardi Gras-themed float.
