Greenopia Promotes Businesses Going "Green"

A new company is making it easier for consumers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York to find environmentally-friendly businesses. Greenopia.com acts as a virtual directory of green businesses that are categorized and rated through the "leaf awards."

The number of leafs a business receives (four is the maximum) is directly related to the percentage of organic product produced or sold. The criteria for the "Florists" category is that more than 25 percent of a florist's total flower inventory must be organically grown. Nurseries must have at least 25 percent of plant inventory grown organically to qualify for the "Nurseries and Garden Supply" category.

This is not a paid guide, so the only way a business gets listed on the site is to apply and let Greenopia's local research teams screen your business to see if it does match up with the required criteria. Right now, the service only rates businesses in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. A New York City edition is currently being researched and is tentatively set to be published sometime in 2008.

Click here for a "Preliminary Listing Application." Greenopia does publish a printed guide and its listings are added or updated 12 to 18 months after the previous publication. Listings on the Web site are currently only updated quarterly with plans to convert to monthly updates.
