Talking Politics On the Job
The 100-plus attendees of Congressional Action Days no doubt have politics on their minds as they head back to their businesses (as if the primaries aren’t enough to do that). But, should they talk about politics in the workplace? Maybe, maybe not, advises a recent article in Workforce Management.
While you might be inclined to discuss politics at work, your co-workers are torn about whether they would engage in a political debate at the office, the article states.
About “35 percent of employees are uncomfortable with political discourse, while nearly 40 percent have no problem endorsing their ideas and candidates to colleagues. About one-quarter of those surveyed said they hold neutral political opinions.” And the numbers differ slightly when talking about sharing your political opinions with your boss; some feel comfortable doing so (40 percent); some don’t (38 percent); and others are unsure about choosing one way or the other (22 percent).
One thing is sure though, if you attended Congressional Action Days, don’t be shy about giving SAF a play-by-play on what went on during your meetings with your representative and/or senators and their staffs. Be sure to send your feedback to SAF’s senior directors of government relations, Jeanne Ramsay (jramsay@safnow.org) or Lin Schmale (lschmale@safnow.org), or call (800) 336-4743, so SAF lobbyists can follow up with the congressional offices on those conversations.
