Colorado Designer of the Year Awarded

2008 Inaugural Colorado Cup 1st Place Winner and Colorado Designer of the Year, Cindy Anderson AIFD, of Design Works, A Floral Studio, in Colorado Springs, Colo.  (center), Shannon Conner, 2nd place, of Schluter Floral in Durango, Colo.  (right) and Erica Rasmussen 3rd place, of Bouquets  in Denver.

Up against 14 other experienced designers from across the Rocky Mountain State, Cindy Anderson, AIFD, of Design Works, A Floral Studio, in Colorado Springs, Colo., took home the Inaugural Colorado Cup at the 2008 Colorado Floral Designer of the Year competition.

The Colorado Retail Florists Association sponsored the event where each contestant created a bridal bouquet, an arrangement for a children's party and a sympathy arrangement in about 2.5 hours.

Along with winning the cup, Anderson took first place in both the Bridal and Sympathy categories and was awarded a hand-blown glass vase trophy from Blenko Glass, personally signed and dated by Richard Blenko; a $500 cash prize on behalf of Golden Flowers; and up to $300 in expenses to attend and represent Colorado in the National Designer of Year contest to be held in Denver on Oct.4.

"Everyone said they learned from the other designers as well as the judges because they all received their judging sheets back," says Maggie Binet, AIFD, Colorado Cup co-chairman. "Some said they gained confidence for upcoming AIFD testing since we used the national AIFD evaluation criteria for judging.  And then, they said, it was just plain fun to try a different kind of designing from everyday design."

Other winners included:
• Shannon Conner of Schluter Floral in Durango, Colo., took first place in party design and second place overall with a $250 cash prize and plaque sponsored by Richards, Seeley and Schaefer Insurance.
• Eria Rasmussen of Bouquets in Denver was the third place winner overall, winning $150 cash prize sponsored by Equiflor.
• Tim Hannon of The Flower Shop at Castle Pines in Castle Rock, Colo., won "The People's Choice Award" and received a $100 cash prize sponsored by Garden Centers of Colorado.
