Longtime Journalist Is Celebrated With Flowers

Legendary journalist Helen Thomas, known throughout her 50-plus-year career for her incendiary questions in the White House Press Briefing Room, recently sparked a floral movement.

C-SPAN footage from a recent press briefing helped spearhead an Internet campaign proclaiming that the longtime reporter deserves flowers.

Thomas, a Hearst Newspapers columnist, sharply questioned White House Press Secretary Dana Perino about the George W. Bush administration's interrogation tactics, and then asked her colleagues, who were silent on the topic, "Where is everybody? [silence] For God's sake!"

The floral crusader, Micah Fitch, who was responsible for organizing the "thank Thomas with flowers" campaign, reports on his Web site that more than 50 bouquets have been sent to the reporter's office. In addition, the site states that more than 500 individuals donated "$4,300 to keep the flowers coming." The Washington, D.C.-based florist, A Little Shop of Flowers, fielded the bulk of the bouquet orders for Thomas.

Thomas thanked Fitch and the floral gift-givers on his Web site. She writes: "To all the senders of the beautiful flowers, I am overwhelmed and deeply grateful for all the kindness and encouragement you have shown me. It is great to know that there are those who care about our fellowman and our great country."
