Bulb Grower Shines in Business Journal Spotlight

Seattle's business community got to peek inside the high-tech world of cut-flower greenhouses after the Puget Sound Business Journal profiled Leo Roozen,  AAF, president of Washington Bulb in Mount Vernon, Wash., on June 2.

"I've known the reporter for years," Roozen explains. "She called and wanted to do the story."

Roozen has led his family's business for more than two decades. He is SAF's president-elect.

The story touched on myriad aspects of the business — from harvesting procedures to product mix. (Washington Bulb sells more than three million lilies annually, and cuts more than 100 million flowers a year.)

"We grow all kinds of cut flowers, like lilies, 365 days a year in the greenhouses," Roozen told the Business Journal. "And it is like a factory — our greenhouses are all computerized with timers, shades, fans, watering booms and conveyor belts. We can fool the flowers into doing what we want them to."
