Government Survey Charts Decline in Number of Florists

A new survey from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that both the number of retail florists and the number of employees at florist establishments are declining.

The number of retail florist establishments fell 2.5 percent in 2005, according to the recently released County Business Patterns. In 2005 there were 21,135 retail florists, compared to 21,667 the year before. As shown in the graph (below), the survey has documented a decline in the number of florists each year since 1998. In the past dozen years, the survey found only one period of increase, in 1996.

The total number of employees at florist establishments also has declined, most recently from almost 110,000 in 2004 to 101,861 in 2005, a decrease of 7.3 percent. In the past five years, the number of personnel at retail florist establishments has fallen, and the average number of employees at florists declined below five for the first time in five years in 2005, dropping to 4.82.

County Business Patterns is an annual series that provides sub-national economic data between economic censuses. The series excludes data on self-employed individuals and thus may differ from other counts provided by the government.
