CREATING A VIRTUAL WEST VIRGINIA STATE TESOL CONFERENCE FROM SCRATCH: A TEAM EFFORT |
Isaac Willis Larison, Marshall University - Literacy Education Program Faculty and Current President of WV TESOL. South Charleston, West Virginia, USA |
The global pandemic and national shutdown of 2020-2021 disrupted our conference scheduled for March 2020. Like many other educational conferences, we postponed the conference, returned the registration fees, and hoped for the best. We will hold the conference this year in a virtual format. We have stayed with our theme from 2020, “Culture and Identity in the English Language Classroom,” contacted those who were slated to present, and found a new date for 2021. We are a small but dynamic affiliate of TESOL and our yearly conference is a valuable opportunity for graduate students, Pre-K – 12 teachers, adult educators, university faculty, and other TESOL professionals throughout the state and Appalachian Region to gather and explore, research, content, and opportunities for practitioners in our field of study. This year, our conference will be held on Saturday, April 17. Participants will be able to choose from prerecorded sessions and synchronous presentations. For more information about the conference visit: https://www.tesolwv.org/2021-conference. Come Join Us! Read More |

THE COVID-19 EDUCATION METAPHORS |
Erin Henriksen, English Teachers' Association of Israel (ETAI), Lecturer in English at The David Yellin Academic College of Education in Jerusalem, Israel |
I tell the pre-service English teachers in my courses to "put up their educational antennae." I want them to notice language - vocabulary, grammar patterns, idioms, spelling rules, and texts - and think about how to teach it. This year, our educational antennae have been tuned to helping students learn despite the pandemic. The language we use to describe the Covid-19 crisis also reflects issues we need to grapple with as teachers. I would like to share a few metaphors addressing these perennial educational challenges.
