Betsy Magness Leadership Institute: Call for Applications

Application deadline is 3:00 pm EST Friday, May 23, 2008

The application period for the 2008-09 Betsy Magness Leadership Institute (BMLI) classes is now open.  Applications will be accepted until 3:00 pm EST Friday, May 23.

This year, BMLI celebrates 15 years of preparing senior-level women to take on significant leadership responsibilities with an enhanced program.  For the next classes, Class XVIII and Class XIX, 50 women will be chosen to participate in the industry’s most respected leadership program for women.  Selected BMLI Fellows will participate in a yearlong educational program which provides direct feedback, personal development and industry involvement.

The program will begin with an intensive one-week workshop on leadership exploration at the award-winning Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Following this October orientation, sessions covering critical leadership attributes, from ethics to political savvy to negotiation skills will be conducted over a 7-month period, ending in May 2009.

Every applicant must have the support and approval for participation by her corporate Human Resources Department.  Applications must be submitted in electronic format only.  The Human Resources approval must be completed and signed by the appropriate HR representative and accompanied by a $100 application fee.

For more information and the BMLI application, click on the following link http://www.wict.org/WICT/Education/Programs/BMLI/ to the WICT BMLI web page. For questions on the application process, contact Kim Woods at 703.234.9804 or kwoods@wict.org.

WICT recognized for streamlining research efforts

With the industry's paradigm shifting toward improved time management and efficiency, WICT and NAMIC have algned to streamline our research survey process for WICT's PAR Initiative and NAMIC's Multi-ethnic Employment in Communications surveys.

WICT and NAMIC research is vital in advancing awareness and understanding about the state of gender and ethnic diversity in the industry. WICT and NAMIC have come together to simplify the reporting process by combining demographic information common to both surveys by presenting the questions in a similar format. This new process saves companies time and effort and allows each organization to develop and distribute its own research survey and create reports that further help the companies build upon proven diversity strategies. In addition, the survey data will be collected and tabulated independently by research partners Working Mother Media and Diversity Inc and will be kept confidential.

2008 PAR Initiative now available

WICT is excited to announce that the 2008 PAR Initiative survey is now available.

The PAR Initiative is WICT's advocacy initiative to both measure and support the advancement of women in the cable and telecommunications industry against the following standards: Pay Equity where women are paid equal to men at every level; Advancement opportunities where women are represented in equal numbers to men at every level; and Resources for work/life support where companies' work/life practices enable the ongoing advancement of women at all levels.

New this year to the PAR Initiative is the ability to complete the research survey online. The online survey has the ability to securely enter data, to complete the survey in more then one sitting, and a built-in auto calculation feature for the demographic questions.

For more information about participating in the survey and to download a PDF copy of this year's survey visit the 2008 PAR Initiative web page.

Visit WICT at the Cable Cares booth (#2847) at the NCTA Cable Show

At the NCTA Cable Show, May 18-20, WICT will be participating with several of our industry partners (including Cable in the Classroom, NAMIC and the Association of Cable Communicators) in an effort to give back to the New Orleans community, which has hosted the Cable Show nine times in the past. Local schools are still desperately trying to rebuild their libraries after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, so please, consider giving in whatever way you can.

 Here are three suggestions:

1. Bring It: Bring a new copy of your favorite elementary school level book and drop it off at the CableCares booth #2847 on the exhibit floor. During the show, CableCares will deliver these new books to the Recovery School District office for disbursement. View a list of suggested books here: http://i.thecableshow.com/2008/CableCares/BringItBookList.pdf

 2.  Buy It: For those who want to do more, full classroom sets of books are available for purchase through the Cable Hope Fund. For $250 CableCares can outfit an entire class with a full set of 30 classroom books for use in English classes. For attendees who wish to contribute $5,000 or more, CableCares has negotiated a 25% discount on all book pricing. Learn more here: https://www.cteusa.com/cablehopefund

3. Contribute It: If your organization publishes or produces video and/or audio content appropriate for grades K through 12, New Orleans schools would love to use it for supplemental instruction. CableCares will work with your distributors to arrange shipping of this content to New Orleans and facilitate distribution to the appropriate schools. E-mail Melinda Schwartz at cablecares@ncta.com and tell her how you want to get involved and contribute materials.

Learn more about these efforts and other ways you can help by visiting www.thecableshow.com/cablecares

Companies and individuals may also get involved by contacting NCTA at cablecares@ncta.com, or call Melinda Schwartz at 301-482-1105. [return to top]
