Metro Transit Completes Its Hiawatha Line

Metro Transit in Minneapolis/St. Paul celebrated the completion of its Hiawatha Light Rail Line with the Dec. 12 opening of the final station, American Boulevard Station, in Bloomington, MN.

At ceremonies Dec. 9, officials from the Metropolitan Council, Hennepin County, and Bloomington dedicated the $2.4 million station and recognized the construction workers who completed the work on budget and six weeks ahead of schedule. A reception for the workers followed at a nearby hotel.

The station, located on 34th Avenue just south of I-494/Highway 5, will serve as the transportation anchor for a future transit-oriented development initiative in Bloomington’s Airport South District. It is the first Hiawatha Line station to feature a split-platform design, with trains headed to Minneapolis stopping north of American Boulevard and Mall of America-bound trains stopping south of the intersection.

“American Boulevard Station is an important and visible component in Bloomington’s vision to transform this area into a sustainable, urban environment with a mix of residential, commercial, and retail uses that capitalize on our unique assets: converging transit routes, the Minnesota Valley national wildlife refuge, Mall of America, and proximity to the airport,” said Bloomington Mayor Gene Winstead. “Because we are focusing over the next decade on the economic, environmental, cultural, and social aspects of development, the Airport South District will be viewed as a great place to live, work, and play.”

Construction of the station began in June 2009. Funding came from a combination of sources including the Bloomington Port Authority, Hennepin County Regional Rail Authority, Metropolitan Council, and federal grants.

Braving howling winds and temperatures in the single digits, Bloomington Mayor Gene Winstead and Metropolitan Council Member Polly Bowles snip a red ribbon officially dedicating the last new station on Metro Transit’s five-year-old Hiawatha Light Rail Line at ceremonies Dec. 9. The American Boulevard Station opened to the public on Dec. 12.
