House T&I to Mark Up Authorization Bill

Action in both houses of Congress on surface transportation authorization legislation is expected to heat up next week as the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee plans to mark up its version of the bill on Thursday, Feb. 2. Committee leaders announced Jan. 26 that the draft bill would be made available on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Other committees in the House must also act to advance the final package to the House floor, and staff has indicated that the leadership has worked with those committees to plan out a markup schedule that will allow the multiple measures to be completed in time for floor action.

The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs is also planning a markup—likely for Feb. 2—of federal public transportation programs under its jurisdiction. Banking Committee Chairman Tim Johnson (D-SD) and Ranking Member Richard Shelby (R-AL) have been working to come to a bipartisan agreement that will allow for smooth passage of their bill that day.

Additionally, the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees the revenue, financing, and trust fund elements of the surface transportation bill, is tentatively planning to meet next week, although no markup has been formally scheduled.
