APTA Hosts Youth Summit Graduate as Intern
BY MAX FINKELPEARL
Editor’s Note: Max Finkelpearl, a participant in the 2015 Youth Summit, worked as an APTA intern in January. He is a student at Oberlin College, interested in transportation, government relations and policy, and a “student advisor” to the 2017 APTA Youth Summit Advisory Committee.
For a college student interested in transportation, there’s no better place to intern than at APTA. During my time in the APTA offices, I had the opportunity to work with the Workforce Development and Educational Services Department.
I first became aware of APTA when I participated in its 2015 Youth Summit program for high school students.

Most of my time has been spent assisting with planning for the 2017 Youth Summit. My responsibilities included creating a survey to send to summit alumni asking about their future educational plans. I was pleased to learn that more than 30 percent of respondents said they are looking forward to careers in the transportation area.
Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to explore my interests in both transportation and government affairs. I was fortunate to meet with Shintaro Takayanagi, the East Japan Railway Company's representative at APTA. I also met with the leadership of APTA’s Government Affairs Department to learn more about their roles and responsibilities and worked on a variety of research projects such as analyzing scholarly papers and APTA’s Workforce Development website.
As I head back to college this spring, I am looking forward to applying what I learned at APTA to my studies there.
