Foothill Gold Line to Break Ground on Rail Extension

As Passenger Transport went to press, the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority was preparing to break ground Dec. 2 for the $1.5 billion, six-station light rail extension from Glendora to Montclair, CA.

The 12.3-mile project will extend Metro Gold Line light rail from its current terminus in Azusa through the San Gabriel Valley and into San Bernardino County, with stations in six cities along the route. The first three years of the project will be spent relocating strategic utilities, conducting pre-construction activities, hiring a design-build contractor and finalizing the project design. Major construction is expected to begin in 2020, with substantial completion in 2026. Los Angeles Metro will operate the line.

The project will generate $2.6 billion in economic output, nearly 17,000 jobs, more than $1 billion in labor income and nearly $40 million in tax revenues for Los Angeles County, according to an estimate from a consulting company. Once Metro begins service, the extension is expected to generate annually more than $52 million in economic output, $17 million in labor income, nearly $800,000 in tax revenues and 277 ongoing jobs.
