UTA Initiates BRT Service Ahead of Schedule

The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) in Salt Lake City recently opened its Utah Valley Express (UVX) BRT line—nine months ahead of schedule to accommodate the schedules of Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, which it serves.

Operating with 60-foot articulated buses, the route is free to all riders through 2021 thanks to an FHWA Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant. It provides frequent service to the nearby cities of Orem and Provo; two of the 18 stops provide connections to FrontRunner commuter rail.

Because of the early opening, some construction on the UVX route will continue through the end of this year. UTA employees answered questions at locations along the route during the first few days of service and such features as real-time electronic station signs, dedicated bus lanes and traffic signal priority will be added as construction continues.

Buses run every six minutes during morning and evening commutes, six to 10 minutes during the day and every 15-60 minutes in the early morning and late evening.
