FTA Recognizes Rural Agencies

Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST), Monterey, CA, and the North Central Regional Transit District (NCRTD) in Española, NM, are among the rural public transit systems recognized Oct. 1 by FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams for exemplifying good community service.

“These transit agencies have proven their dedication to helping people in rural America access jobs, schools, healthcare and other opportunities every day,” Williams said in announcing the recipients of the Administrator’s Award for Outstanding Public Transportation Service in Rural Public Transportation during the biannual National Conference on Rural and Intercity Bus Transportation in Breckenridge, CO. “FTA commends them for doing what is truly life-changing work within their communities.”

MST General Manager/Chief Executive Officer Carl Sedoryk recognized “the hard-working men and women at MST,” adding, “This award shows that our new and growing services to the rural communities of southern Monterey County, and special mobility services for seniors, veterans and persons with disabilities, are a model for similar communities across the nation.”

NCRTD Executive Director Anthony Mortillaro said, “I think all the residents of north central New Mexico can share and take pride in this award. When the NCRTD was certified as the first regional transit district in the state of New Mexico, there were many who dreamed that a more than 10,000-square-mile, four-county area of northern New Mexico could be connected by a network of bus transit routes to provide residents of urban and rural areas access to jobs, education, medical and quality-of-life services. This acknowledgement shows that we can make it happen.” He noted that this is the second time in four years the agency has received the honor.
