C-TRAN Institutes Cigarette Butt Recycling Program

C-TRAN in Vancouver, WA, has found a way to recycle the thousands of discarded cigarette butts collected at Vine BRT station receptacles with the help of TerraCycle, a New Jersey-based recycling company that specializes in hard-to-recycle waste.

TerraCycle separates the cigarette butts by composition and melts the plastic parts into hard plastic that can be used to make new recycled industrial products. The company recycles any remaining tobacco, and ash is recycled as compost. See a video of the process here.

As part of the program, TerraCycle donates $1 to the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program for every pound of cigarettes collected. C-TRAN will also designate a local charity to receive donations as part of the program.

According to C-TRAN, as many as one to two pounds of cigarette butts are discarded at Vine stations every week, or approximately 2,000-4,000 individual butts. Recycling keeps them out of landfills or from causing environmental harm. The agency said it may begin including cigarette butts currently collected at its other facilities in the future.

The C-TRAN Green Team, an employee-led initiative aimed at making C-TRAN a cleaner, greener agency, spearheaded the recycling effort. Since its formation in 2017, the Green Team has overseen positive internal changes and led C-TRAN’s participation in numerous community events, including two successful document shredding events at one of the agency’s transit centers.
