New CEO, Interim Named

Tyree, WATA
Todd Tyree is joining the Williamsburg (VA) Area Transit Authority (WATA) as its executive director, effective Feb. 1.

Tyree joins WATA after serving as a program manager with System High Corporation. He was a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, serving in senior officer positions including chief financial officer of the U.S. Air Force Services Agency, base budget officer, expeditionary mission support group commander and deputy group commander.

Bill Porter remained the agency’s interim executive director until Tyree joined the agency.

Smith, Interim, Valley Metro
The Valley Metro RPTA and Valley Metro Rail boards of directors in Phoenix jointly selected Scott Smith, former mayor of Mesa, AZ, and a past president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, as interim chief executive officer for Valley Metro, effective Feb. 1.

Smith, a private sector CEO, accountant and attorney, was elected mayor of Mesa in 2008 and left office in 2014 to run for statewide office. Most recently, he was a resident fellow in the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Eric Anderson, who served as the acting CEO since the departure of Stephen R. Banta in December 2015, has returned to his post as transportation director for the Maricopa Association of Governments.

Smith has agreed to serve as interim CEO until the agency selects a permanent CEO.
