MARTA Rejuvenates TOD with 'Spoke'

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) broke ground Aug. 22 on Spoke, a TOD project anchored by the agency’s Edgewood/Candler Park Station, an event that signals the agency’s revamped community development initiatives.

“This is the first in a new series of TODs that will be going up throughout our service area, and we are thrilled that this community will be the place where we rejuvenate this program,” said MARTA General Manager/Chief Executive Officer Keith T. Parker. He listed MARTA’s principles for using its rail stations to spur new growth:

•    Generating new ridership and enhancing the rider experience for current customers;
•    Strengthening communities—rather than looking for the highest bidder, MARTA wants to bring new development that benefits communities; and
•    Producing funds that could benefit future MARTA projects and expansions.

The name “Spoke” refers to the connectivity the project will provide to the Edgewood and Candler Park communities; the development will help strengthen the areas through housing, retail and mobility.

MARTA partnered with Invest Atlanta on this project and chose Columbia Ventures to lead development at the site.
